Loss and grief are not reserved only when someone dies. Ambiguous loss, a term coined by Dr. Pauline Boss in the 1970s, is often referred to in dementia caregiving literature to describe the experience of loss faced by many families and friends impacted by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. It is defined as a loss that occurs without clear understanding and often leaves people searching for answers, which can complicate the grieving process. Mara Kouides, Education Coordinator with the Finger Lakes Alzheimer's Caregiver Institute, will discuss ambiguous loss and explore ways to cope with this difficult and common caregiving experience.
